Ode to the Tree People of Lincoln Street
They dance and sing
in the language of trees
tonight the forest celebrates the stars
As grandfather oak tells tales of their ancestors
maple saplings listen in awe
and two birch lovers exchange vows
Summer’s final firefly
blinks a premonition
but the warning is lost in the jubilee
Dawn approaches
the trees sway in song
gentle lullabies rock the woods to sleep
Giant steel cats break though their dreams
fossils of ancient mastodons and pterodactyls
fuel that anguish that dwells in metal
Trees scream
splendid roots rip from the ground
as the forest falls on Lincoln Street
