thought circles
thought circles
dawn approaches, and we start for the sloped hill outside
the earth below my bare feet is cool with morning's dew
we stretch a blanket across the damp grass and lie down
there are five of us, six including my dog, gypsy
"it's a thought circle." paige says,
us, lying there, our heads all together
with legs that point out like a lopsided human star
forming the spokes of our medicine wheel
gypsy walks around for a few minutes
finally she settles herself on the blanket at my feet
the sun creeps up above the trees
my friends begin to name shapes they see in the clouds above
"i see it too," everyone else agrees
except for me, i can't see anything
every time i open my eyes the blue sky above me blurs together
so i shut my eyes and listen to the others
